Sound Detective

A little listening adventure for an adult and child to try together. Today, your ears are the detectives.

Adult-guidedSpoken sound playNo writing needed
/s/
Today’s example: the sound /s/

Say a gentle, continuous “ssss”. Keep it a sound, without adding “uh” at the end. Use a sound the child is ready to practise.

The mission

  1. Listen together.Say “sun”, “cup” and “sock” naturally. The adult reads these words aloud; the child does not need to read them.
  2. Find the sound.Ask, “Which words start with /s/?” Say them again if helpful. Explore the answers together: sun and sock.
  3. Go on a tiny sound hunt.Look around for one familiar object whose name begins with /s/. If nothing fits, the adult can suggest a word.
  4. Finish with a discovery.Repeat a favourite word together. Notice the child’s listening effort, then move on to something else.

Words for the grown-up to say

cup
sock

A gentle reminder: This is a listening activity, not a reading test. Model the sound calmly and respect the child’s accent. If it feels difficult, enjoy saying the words together and try another day.
