A clear path into reading
Six developing stages connect listening, sound–letter knowledge, word building and stories. Learning is cumulative, with time to practise before moving on.
The curriculum at a glance
These provisional stages describe the intended journey, rather than fixed age bands. New learning will build on taught knowledge, with practice, observation and review guiding when to move forward.
Notice, distinguish and play with the sounds in spoken language.
Connect a carefully introduced set of speech sounds with written letters.
Bring sounds together to read words, then take words apart to spell.
Discover how two letters can represent one sound and explore more of the English code.
Read connected text that is carefully matched to the sounds already taught.
Revisit, reread and apply growing knowledge with greater ease and understanding.
More than a sequence of sounds
Planned decodable books will use sound–letter patterns already introduced, with carefully managed additional words.
Observation and proposed assessments will help adults identify what is secure and what needs more practice.
Teacher resources and parent materials are being designed to connect learning in school and at home.
